About Kharis House

Kharis House is dedicated to providing vulnerable young mothers and their babies with holistic residential care, dignity, and a clear pathway toward an abundant, self-sufficient future. We integrate spiritual support, education, life skills, and comprehensive daily care to break cycles of poverty and restore dignity to every mother and child in our community.

Role Summary

The Nutrition Coordinator oversees all aspects of kitchen operations, daily meal planning, nutrition, and food service for the Kharis House campus community. Beyond standard food preparation and kitchen management, this role plays an essential part in our holistic care mission: utilizing the kitchen as a place of hospitality, consistent care, cultural bridge-building, and resident empowerment.

The ideal candidate combines strong christian leadership, nutrition, inventory and cost-control discipline, and high standards of food hygiene with a passion for teaching, mentoring, and equipping young mothers with practical, transferable nutrition and kitchen skills.

Key Responsibilities

1. Global Nutritious Menu Design & Biblical Hospitality

  • Global & Diverse Menu Curation: Design, engineer, and implement a diverse, nutrition-focused global menu that incorporates international dishes while honoring local Zambian flavors and ingredients.

  • Cross-Cultural Hospitality: Prepare and execute thoughtful, culturally sensitive food service for international mission teams, global partners, donor delegations, and visiting guests from around the world.

  • Christian Worldview & Stewardship: Grounds menu engineering in biblical principles of creation care, food stewardship, gratefulness, and Christian fellowship—using shared meals to cultivate community and unity across cultures.

  • Special Dietary Accommodations: Ensure international and resident dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergen-sensitive, cultural preferences) are met with care, dignity, and excellence.

2. Culinary Operations & Meal Preparation

  • Daily Meal Delivery: Plan, prepare, oversee and serve wholesome, balanced, and nutrition-focused daily meals tailored to the health and developmental needs of young mothers and infants.

  • Campus Event Catering: Lead high-volume catering for campus gatherings, holiday celebrations, visiting delegations, and community outreach events.

3. Kitchen Management, Systems & Safety

  • Food Safety & Hygiene: Build, implement, and enforce HACCP-compliant food safety management, sanitation SOPs, and health standards across all storage, preparation, and serving areas.

  • Procurement & Supply Chain: Direct kitchen inventory, stock ordering, and supplier relationships to maintain robust supply pipelines and eliminate stockouts.

  • Financial Stewardship & Cost Control: Manage departmental budgets, financial forecasting, and cost controls (food cost percentages, waste minimization, and resource allocation) without compromising nutritional quality or guest hospitality.

  • Equipment & Facilities: Maintain functional kitchen operational standards, overseeing kitchen layouts and routine maintenance of kitchen equipment.

4. Resident Empowerment & Practical Education

  • Life Skills Mentorship: Mentor residents in basic kitchen safety, food hygiene, global meal planning, and nutrition to build confidence and daily independence.

  • Structured Culinary Training Program: Design, implement, and lead a foundational kitchen-skills curriculum (utilizing Training of Trainers methodology) to equip residents with professional-grade, transferable skills for future employment and economic self-sufficiency.

5. Leadership & Mission Alignment

  • Team Leadership & Capacity Building: Recruit, train, and supervise kitchen staff, chefs, assistants, or volunteers, conducting regular performance appraisals and fostering a culture of accountability.

  • Mission Integration: Actively uphold and model the Kharis House Core Values and Statement of Faith in all daily interactions with residents, staff, and visitors.
